Starting with the Basics

     Starting with the Basics
Moranda Frenette

In Surrey, British Columbia on Tuesday, September 16th, a 17-year old girl by the name of Serena Vermeersch was killed in a random attack. She was found in 14600 block of 66 Avenue close to the railroad tracks in the East Newton Neighbourhood.
This lead is very effective because the young girl draws the attention of readers, this is because she is at the age of still being a minor as well as someones daughter or student. Fordy has stated "Any loss of life is a tragedy, but Serena had just turned 17 and had her whole life ahead of her."
The most important information of the story was included first, the information included was what had happened, which was her death, which was also a random act of cruelty and murder, as well as her age and the area it had happened in.
Although, the article did not contain a good ending, this is because it simply stated the action the silver truck took after the murder, rather than what the police are going to do about it, or it could have included family responses to keep the reader interested and sympathetic towards the situation.

In Red River, Winnepeg on August 9th, 15 year old Tina Fontaine was found missing. Following more than a week after that, her body was discovered close to the Alexander docks. The police have come to the conclusion that her death was a homicide.
Although Tina Fontaine had ran away before it is obvious that the death was not caused by her own mistakes, she was a young, small female that had been taken advantage of and murdered. This lead is very effective because it draws the attention of readers concerned about the well being of young women in their area, as well as all over the world. “She’s a child. This is a child that has been murdered … Society should be horrified,” he said. “That’s why we’re asking for people to come forward. And that's why we're asking for people to help us and to come forward with anything they know about this child.”  Sargent O'Donovan had stated.
In this article, the most important information such as who, what and where was included first. Who being 15 year old Tina Fontaine, what being that she was taken advantage of and murdered and lastly where being in Red River, Winnipeg. Throughout the article, more details were included and it had a strong ending asking for the help of other people with any information that could be linked to the investigation.

In Ontario there have been 60 people arrested along with almost 250 charges concerning children sexual exploitation over the internet. Alongside this, there were 99 search warrants spread across the Ontario police. The charges involved in this crime are "child luring and making, possessing and distributing child pornography." These charges have been pressed against people from their teenage years up until their senior years.
This lead is very effective to it's reader because it acts like a wake up call as to what can happen over the internet and to civilians children. "They go to the places on the internet where children are present," he said. "They go online, and they are very good at what they do in seeking out children that they want to prey upon." Frank Goldschmidt, OPP's provincial strategy coordinator said.
In this article, the most important information concerning what had happened, being the child exploitation was brought up, along with where it takes place, which is spread across Ontario.
Following the strong informative beginning, the ending also takes a grand turn in which the information that the victims had actually used other people for camera-holding, which makes the case more difficult and gives the reader a sense of shock as to how many people may actually be involved.

Reflection Entry #1- First Newspapers

Reflection Entry #1- First Newspapers
Moranda Frenette

Compared to today, some of the obvious differences with historical newspapers is the material that it is written on, such as foolscap paper. Also, the information within the newspaper was much shorter than that of the information today.

Publick Occurrences was forced to shut down because they were critical of the government, I do not think the government should be able to do this because although the information wasn't ideal for the governments publicity, freedom of speech is a law that the government approves of. Therefore, the Publick Occurrences should have gotten away with it.

The article on Publick Occurrences also indicates the the newspaper was considered a source of interactive journalism, even three centuries before the internet ever came about. It was also argued that it was considered the first news blog in America. I think this comparison was made because in the back of the newspapers there were blank pieces of paper where people could leave their opinions and comments. This is similar to blogs and posts today because we can simply leave a note or comment underneath each post and it can be seen throughout the entire world.

Seeing as many newspapers are posting about the government and their secrets, I find that it should be considered "ok" for the government to do because as citizens, we all deserve to know what is going on with our, and other governments.

Yes, I was truly surprised that the first newspaper in Canada was in Halifax. Personally, I thought it would have been in a bigger province or city, such as Ottawa. I think it should have been in Ottawa because that is the capital of Canada.

Time for reflection

The type of writing I found most difficult throughout the course would be anything in an essay format. I don’t enjoy being told exactly how to write something and what about. On the other hand, the types of writing I enjoyed the most were any that I could be creative and use my imagination. It adds more character to the piece of writing as well as voice. One story that I believed was superior was “Liam’s Adventure”, this is because I got to use my creative side. (http://bbt43.blogspot.ca/2012/11/liams-adventure.html ). But, there are also the selections of writing that I would be honored to have the chance to do over, such as “Billy Madison: Comical or terrible?” simply because I believe that this piece of writing didn’t show my best abilities. (http://bbt43.blogspot.ca/2012/09/billy-madison-comical-or-terrible.html).

The peer assessments that were preformed in the classroom were very helpful. I believe this because it gave you the chance to have other’s judge your work before the final mark is in place. This way, you can go back and fix the mistakes you have made. I did enjoy reading other students work because it gave me the chance to see the creative side as well as the skills my fellow classmates has.

My biggest weakness in writing would have to be following a procedure 100%. I didn’t enjoy being told how to write, but as time went on within the class I realized that following a certain format can actually improve the look and entire theme of my writing pieces.

The most enjoyable blog that we were asked to complete would be “Telling the Story”, I enjoyed this assignment very much. “Telling the Story” gave you the chance to pretend to be a younger child going on an adventure, which was very enjoyable once you’re expected to act mature day in and day out.  But there is also one assignment I didn’t care for in particular, and that assignment would have to be this one (Time for Reflection), I simply do not like reflecting on my work and classes that I have completed this past semester.

Dear Reindeer

Dear Reindeer,
Christmas wouldn’t be possible without the help of each and every one of you. You’re each individually special and I appreciate the heart and energy you put into your work. I just want all of you precious reindeer to know how much I truly appreciate you all.
Dasher, your short bursts of speed and energy are essential to make sure that the job gets done.
Dancer, having an athletic and fast reindeer on my team really helps a lot. You being so athletic and graceful helps me and my sleigh avoid obstacles throughout the holiday season. You're a stunning reindeer that also helps our appearance, even though we're not seen that much.
Prancer, you're the most majestic reindeer I have on my team. Your high leg kicks and perfect posture helps the team in many ways. Remember, confidence is key.
Vixen, even though you're an extreme flirt, you have great strength and stamina. You keep this team going with your playful attitude and dedication.
Comet, you're stubborn, but you make up for it with your strong will, unique leadership ability and you're always focused.
Cupid, you're a very loving reindeer and a great running companion for Comet. You always need a little extra attention, but that's okay because you're the favorite of my beloved Mrs. Claus.
Donner, you're a very proud and confident reindeer and I admire you for that. You're one of the strongest on my team, there fore you pick up for other's slack.
Blitzen, you're aggressive and very determined, but no reindeer could have a bigger heart than you do.
Rudolph, my dear Rudolph, you're the youngest of the bunch and you get picked on a lot for your large, glowing, red nose but you do save Christmas regularly. Thank you.

Love always,
Santa

Influencing Change

Influencing Change:

To Kill a Mockingbird by Nelle Harper Lee is a prejudice story that includes purity, and strength. The setting is in Maycomb County, Alabama. Within the movie, there is a false accusation set to an African-American man by the name Tom Robinson. Tom is accused of raping a younger female whom is white. Since people are cruel and racist, Atticus Finch the lawyer of Tom has a difficult time defending him as a white lawyer. But his daughter, the main character, Jean Louise (Scout) Finch isn't aware of the prejudice times around her. Being a black man as a large disadvantage causes Tom and Atticus to lose the trial, announcing Tom as guilty rather than innocent.

Back in the mid ninety’s people were much more prejudiced and racist, but even though it’s said that we’re over that stage now, you can still see racist acts happening today in our everyday life. To Kill a Mockingbird gives you a different outlook on what society is really like. By showing that a little girl can see the wrong in the world but grown adults cannot, makes you really believe that adult doesn’t have any common sense.

Reading To Kill a Mockingbird certainly made me realize the sick world around us. People shouldn’t be judged by their race or religion, but by their personalities. If a white man is accused of a tragedy and the people know that it was impossible for the man to complete the task, then the man would be let go. But if it were a black man, they wouldn’t take into consideration his disabilities; they’d simply give him an unfair trial and send him to prison, taking him away from possibly his wife and children.

The book gives you a complete understanding of how people aren’t always treated fairly. People will be judged by their race and it isn’t right to do so. People should be judged by their actions, rather than the color of their skin or their beliefs. A book or piece of work can change someone's entire outlook on things, To Kill a Mockingbird certainly changed mine.

Time Capsule

PART 1
Dear Time Capsule Committee,

I hope you truly consider in giving me the honour of placing my items in the time capsule.

Granny’s Jump Rope
I believe that my grandmother’s jump rope should qualify to be placed into the time capsule. It has significance for both me and my grandmother, since she's had it since she was a child. I would really enjoy having this extraordinary and unique item placed for my family’s generations to come.

Grandaddy and Me (Picture)
My grandfather is one of the most amazing men that I have ever met.  He is a remarkable man and I will continue to look up to him just like I always have (physically and metaphorically). Ever since the day I was born, we had a strong connection that could never be replaced. I never want my granddaddy to be forgotten. This picture includes him, me and a bright red tractor. He bought this tractor because when he worked in the field with his father, he built up a love for them; I believe that should be remembered.

Adam Sandler Movies
My favorite actor is Adam Sandler, he is simply hilarious. Every move he makes and words that come out of his mouth simply crack me up. My Uncle Scott (brother of my mother) introduced me to Adam Sandler by getting me to watch a movie with him, ever since I’ve been star struck. My favorite movies are “Mr. Deeds” and “Billy Madison” and I think others should be able to enjoy these films like I did.

Liam Hemsworth (Picture)
Liam Hemsworth is absolutely beautiful and since in 100 years he won’t be alive and will most likely be forgotten, I believe that people should be able to enjoy his beauty in the future. He is an amazing man and I’d like for my family to know that I have good taste and that the people of 2012 weren't entirely disgusting or hard on the eyes.

Captains Basketball Jersey #23
My basketball jersey means a lot to me. It has my favorite number and the large blue "C”. I love playing basketball, I want everyone to know that and possibly even consider playing themselves. That's if in 100 years they still play sports, since technology is taking over the world.

PART 2
      Dear people of the future,

This letter your are reading dates back about one-hundred years.

My name is Moranda, your ancestor. My parents are Dwayne and Angela, I have a brother, Jesse and a half sister, Anjie. My grandparents on my mother's side are George (Grandaddy) and Heather (Granny). My grandparents on my father's side are Walter (Grampy) and Mildred (Grammy). As for my great grandparents, I only have four left; Julie, Grandaddy's mother; Hayde and Phil, Granny's parents; and Mary, Grampy's mother.

I am a 15 year old Canadian girl that lives in a tiny village of Blackville, New Brunswick. There isn't much to do in Blackville or it's surrounding area, and since I tend to be a social butterfly I struggle to deal with this small place. We have run down malls, and the best place to be is either the hockey rink or the Studio 5 theater. But then again, most of us struggled for money for gas to get to these places. There isn't much work which sends many people's family's out west until they can afford to come home. "There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see..." as it states in To Kill a Mockingbird by Nelle Harper Lee.

Our prime minister of Canada today, Wednesday, December. 5th, 2012 is Stephen Harper. He is most likely the most important man to us Canadians. Also, Osama Bin Laden was killed in my life time, he was a cruel terrorist. In fact, everyone celebrated his death. I'm sure if I began to speak about our technology know it would completely bore you people of 2112.

      Ciao,
      Moranda Frenette
